Hey everyone! I kind of have somewhat of an underwater theme going on since once again we’ll be diving in 😉 to some underwater art. These photos were taken by photographer Benjamin Von Wong who I may need to take a closer look at later since I love these photos so much! I don’t know what it is but I think the vastness and mystery of the ocean is something that has always intrigued me. I don’t know how to swim and I think that adds a certain aspect of spookiness to the big blue. Whatever the reason, these photos are hauntingly beautiful. I just love the way the clothing and hair of the models move. This is especially true for the first photo. It looks as if she is descending from some world up above and is floating down into another realm. It comes across as very angelic to me.
I also love the movement and flow in all of these, it makes these models seem like they actually belong in these setting and are not just people being placed in a scene to make a pretty picture. I’m going to put the link to the article and images down below but let me just tell you now that these photos took a lot of work. In order to pull this off Von Wong needed freedivers who would also be the models, stylists, makeup, etc. This is one of the qualities of a good artist that I really admire. He had a vision and did what he had to make it come to life and he did it right without cutting corners. No one’s perfect and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly diligent when it comes to my craft. However, when I do something I try to put my best in it and do the best I can with what I know I can do. Effort is everything and it certainly paid off for Von Wong! As always below are my favorites (which in this case is all of them)and the link to the article! Until next time!

Hi everyone! I was on somewhat of a hiatus this summer which wasn’t necessarily intentional. This blog mostly functions as a kind of school blog but I usually try to make posts even when I’m not in school because I like sharing things with you guys. This summer I was pretty busy, I was working a lot and when I wasn’t working I was trying to enjoy the summer with my leftover time. That being said I really didn’t do much on the artsy side or writing side for that matter either. However, I wasn’t gone, I’ve been trying to go on Twitter more often and try to make a somewhat interesting tweet. By the way if you haven’t followed me on Twitter please feel free to do so @melfranco17 and send me a message or two!
My goals for this semester are to start working on ways to develop my style more and expand my portfolio. At this point I’m not completely worried about my portfolio but I definitely think I need to start focusing on it more. What I had a hard time on during the summer was coming with projects to create. I really wanted to do simple projects so that I could have a couple of small items instead of a larger project since I was low on time. I guess the good thing about school is that time is more balanced and scheduled, at least for me. I’d like to keep doing mini projects along the way not only for fun but so hopefully something will come from them. I’m thinking more like postcards, posters for events, even maybe some promotional-like items, who knows! Also, I promise to have much more interesting posts with pretty pictures soon! Until next time guys!
Hey everyone! Although this is not really an art topic, yet in a way it is, I still wanted to share it with you guys! This amazing aquarium has opened up in China and from the looks of it its amazing! It’s also the largest aquarium in the world so that makes it even cooler! Like I said before, this may not seem very artsy but it really is. Think about it…someone has to design how a building looks and how the visitors interact with it.
Design can be heavily seen throughout the aquarium, you just have to realize it. I really love how tanks become the building, it’s literally like a building of glass that has been filled with water, its amazing. That being said, it also really freaks me out. I don’t know what it is but I do not like large seemingly open spaces so I don’t know how I’d feel being in a room of water with the only separation being glass. Even when I was little I would never go really close one of the tanks that took up the space of a wall because the bottom was lower than the floor and I felt like I’d fall in. Yes, I know that’s really stupid but hey, it freaked me out…plus I can’t swim, so yeah.
Despite my fears I think this place is really cool and would really give visitors more of underwater experience. Although the tanks are huge and a bit intimidating so is the ocean so it kind of fits. I thought this was pretty cool and I wanted to share it with you guys. Who knows, if I ever go to China maybe I’ll stop by…maybe :). Down below is a link to the article and more pictures along with my favorites. Until next time!
Hey everyone! I just wanted to do a quick blurb, I think that’s what this is, about a newish way to contact me! You guys may have seen my Twitter feed on my blog but in case you haven’t its there! Some feel free to tweet me, I’d love to hear from you guys and I always love seeing your comments. Well that’s all I wanted to say so until next time!
Hey everyone! I found these pet portraits and I thought they were pretty cool for several reasons! One of them is how well the photographer, Elke Vogelsang, captures the expressions of the dogs. There are tons of photos of people’s pets online but these are different because they really capture the personality of the dogs. I liked the contrast of the dark background because it really highlights the dogs themselves rather than distracting us with their environment. I feel like her intent and focus is on the dogs so I think she was really successful in taking these images.
I have dogs myself and I’ve taken photos of them but never in a studio setting or without an indication towards their natural environment; which is basically the house since my dogs are lazy and don’t care for the outdoors much. I really liked these photos because they’re different from a typical dog photo and some of the expressions are hilarious! I recommend you check out all of them, the link is below, but I included my favorites!
Hey everyone! I debated about whether or not to post this because I wasn’t sure if it was artsy enough but I figured this is my blog and I thought it was interesting, so here it is. I read an article recently about camera that were installed in a koala enclosure in Australia. What really captured my interest, besides the cute koalas, was the idea that these cameras were used to take selfies of the animals. Basically the animal would have to approach the camera and get within its frame and a sensor would go off to capture the image and viola! The cutest selfie!
What stood out about images is how interesting they came out and how they look like a photographer took them. I thought it was a nice way to have the koalas engage in the process and have a more natural photo. Apparently the koalas liked the idea too since there’s plenty of photos. We’ve been talking a lot about the presence of social media within our world and selfies are a large part of that too. They allow us to capture what we are doing in the exact moment we are doing it, regardless of how ridiculous we look. That concept can be seen with these photos too as we are able to see the koalas explore and capture their personalities in the moment without human interaction. As always I have my favorites below but I’ll link the rest incase you need more! Until next time!
Hey everyone! This is a little different from things I normally post on here but I thought I’d share my thoughts with you today! I was really surprised when I got several surprising notifications from WordPress today. I got on here with the intent to write a blog post (which I will do, I promise) and I got distracted by the fact that my blog has a had good number of visits just on this day. Its kind of amazing to me how that happens because all of a sudden there was this burst of interest, which is really awesome. On top of that I now have 100 followers!!! Yay! Thank you guys!
It really does mean a lot though because this blog was born from a class requirement and I never thought I’d have anyone read this blog much less comment. I know I’ve said this before but the fact that people actually read this blog and interact with it is really what keeps me in check. Reality is that I could just throw a couple of images and a couple of lines of “thoughts” and still meet my class requirement. Although I’d never do that because I just can’t. I feel like I need to put my all into everything I do or not do it at all, and this results in many sleepless nights but in the end its worth it to me. I just like putting my best, or close to it, out there.
Knowing that people are reading this blog is just another push to put something meaningful on this blog so this is just a thank you! This blog has become so much more than I thought it would and its thanks to my followers and readers so thank you guys! Be sure to look forward to an explosion of posts since I’m a little behind on my post count. I am now obligated to catch up because I told you this and you now expect it. Anyway, thanks again and until next time guys!
Hey everyone! I recently found some really cool photos of eyes that I wanted to share with you! If you’re new to this blog I have a strange obsession with drawing eyes. They are the first thing I start drawing when I’m bored or otherwise. I’m not sure why but it’s just something I do so this group of photos really caught my eye. I’m sorry, but I had to, eye just couldn’t resist. Okay, enough of that, but I seriously thought these were pretty cool.
The majority of these are animal eyes, which was interesting to look at since I really don’t pay attention something like that. Also, all of the these images are really saturated with color and are just beautiful to look at! I can definitely see myself using some of these as inspiration within my own sketches, since like I said I don’t really pay attention to the physical features of animals like I do humans. As soon as I get some free time I want to try drawing some these and maybe even merging them with human features…who knows ;). Unfortunately Flickr does not like people just grabbing photos so I can’t post any images here but there will be a link down below. My favorites are the horse fly (first image), cat, and blue-eyed dog. Until next time!
